Farafina
In West Africa, textile traditions remain part of everyday life. Cotton is still grown and spun, cloth woven and sewn, and textiles transformed with indigo and earth – techniques refined over centuries. Today, however, these traditions face growing competition from cheap imported textiles, particularly from China.
The exhibition Farafina brings together dyed textiles made for use rather than display: everyday cloth from Mali, Mauritania and Guinea. Their colours, patterns and techniques carry knowledge passed from one generation to the next.
The word Farafina means Africa in Bamana, a language spoken by some 20 million people.
Farafina, 17 September – 14 October 2026 at Studio Fremdeling. Vernissage 16 September 18-20. Welcome!
